This is an unprecedented time in general practice the world over. The profession is in the eye of a
perfect burnout storm since the pandemic began. A fundamental reason for working as a GP is the
desire to help those suffering. However, it is that empathic response that can create the greatest risk
of burnout and compassion fatigue. In short, the greater we care, the greater our vulnerability.
Furthermore, burgeoning red tape and responsibilities contribute to stress and impact the
performance of doctors, resulting in poorer health and medical errors.
I
No one is immune to these effects. GPs naturally feed off the emotional state of their patients and
colleagues. The negative aspect of the work can lead some to struggle with finding and maintaining
a healthy balance in their lives, which has never been more pronounced than through the COVID
pandemic.
J
Applying a series of techniques and self-awareness tools, GPs can be taught how to prevent the toxic
and taxing build-up of negative and invasive effects of their work.
