Background
Antibiotics are among the most frequently prescribed classes of drugs all over the world and it is
estimated that approximately 50% of antibiotic use, in both the outpatient and inpatient settings,
is inappropriate. This inappropriate use will have adverse outcomes for patients and may lead to
increased antibiotic resistance, leading to complications and increased morbidity and mortality.
Methods
A workshop will be conducted for the participants, including GPs, family physicians or family medicine
resistance. The aim of this workshop is to check the awareness of participants regarding antibiotic
resistance and factors associated with it. Case-based interactive sessions will be conducted to find out
reasons for emerging antibiotic resistance all over world, with a focus on common diseases prevalent
in the community, and to find out strategies to improve inappropriate usage of antibiotics and create
more awareness in healthcare community. A pre- and postassessment will be carried out to check
awareness and the practice of antibiotic prescription in their practice and any change in knowledge
and behaviour after attending the workshop.
Results
Results will be analysed using SPSS version 20 and differences in their change in knowledge and
behaviours will be checked through Chi-squared and P < 0.005 will be considered significant.
Conclusions
The workshop will update participants’ perception of antibiotic prescription for common conditions
prevalent in the community.
