Transgender people are individuals whose gender identity, expression or behaviour differs from the
gender they were assigned at birth, defining ‘gender’ as an internal experience that can become
masculine, feminine, non-binary or ‘non-gender’. This population has less access to higher education
and, when they do, they face more obstacles that contribute to greater inequity. The Sustainable
Development Goals in the 2030 agenda do not include the Declaration of Alma-Ata. The Astana
Declaration makes explicit the right to health and the emphasis on populations with greater disparities,
inequalities and inequities. Since 2017, Universidad del Valle drew up the Diverse Campus Program
(DC) to respond to the population with Diverse Gender Identities and Sexual Orientations (Diverse
GI-SO) within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDO) 2030. They focus on
generating actions for the objectives that apply, which are as follows:
4: ‘Guarantee inclusive, equitable and quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for
all’. University dropout is avoided in the diverse IG/SDO population through the offer of comprehensive
care services (biopsychosocial).
5: ‘Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’. All non-hegemonic or diverse gender
identities are recognised, contributing to gender equality as a fundamental human right.
10: ‘Reduce inequality within and between countries’. A culture of education in sexuality is built, in
sexual diversity, with respect for the difference.
16: ‘Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies’. Strategies are implemented to reduce all forms of
violence on the university campus and in the region.
17: ‘Revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development’. Participation in international,
national, regional and local networks for joint work (groups, health institutions), to benefit people with
IG/OSD.
The program carries out its actions according to the main problems identified: lack of visibility of the
LGBTIQ+ population, biopsychosocial health risk, mental health problems, addictions, self-medication
and family relationships.
