Content
A cross-sectional study was conducted on newly entered undergraduate students at the family
medicine clinic of a public university. Of the 1403 students, 397 were male and 1006 were female. The
mean age of the students was 19 years; 667 (47.5%) students had a normal BMI, whereas 216 (15.4%)
were underweight (15.4%), 203 (14.5) were overweight and 228 (16.3%) were obese. Among the
students, 665 (47.4%) had no protection against hepatitis B, 355 (25.3%) needed a booster dose and
367 (26.2%) had protective antibodies against hepatitis B.
Goal
The study identified key health issues in newly enrolled undergraduate students that were addressed
at the time of visit. Those without protective antibodies against hepatitis B were advised to receive
vaccination accordingly. Students with a BMI in the range of overweight and obesity were counselled
in detail and advised regarding weight reduction.
